Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP)

LCVP is a Senior Cycle Programme of the Department of Education and Skills, designed to give a strong vocational dimension to the Leaving Certificate (established). The programme combines the virtues of academic study with a new and dynamic focus on self-directed learning, enterprise, work and the community. Young people taking the LCVP have a unique opportunity to develop their interpersonal, vocational and technological skills. These skills are equally relevant to the needs of those preparing for further education, seeking employment or planning to commence their own business sometime in the future.
The primary goal of the LCVP is to prepare young people for adult life by ensuring that they are educated in the broadest sense, with an ability to cope and thrive in an environment of rapid change. Participants in the programme are encouraged to develop skills and competencies fundamental to both academic and vocational success.

Throughout the programme students are encouraged to:
• be innovative and enterprising
• take responsibility for their own learning
• adapt to changing circumstances
• evaluate data and devise solutions to problems
• communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively
• work with others as part of a team
• investigate and plan career options
• use information and communications technologies
• investigate local business and community enterprises
• learn from their experiences.
These skills and qualities are equally relevant to the needs of those preparing for further education, seeking employment or planning to start their own business.

PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS
Requirements for the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme, which is of two years’ duration, are as follows:
• LCVP students must take a minimum of five Leaving Certificate Subjects
(at Higher, Ordinary or Foundation Level) including Irish
• two of the above must be selected from one of the designated Vocational
Subject Groupings
• they must study the two Link Modules, namely Preparation for the
World of Work and Enterprise Education
• students are required to follow a recognised course in a Modern European Language (other than Irish or English).

In addition to the above core subjects, students select four additional subjects from a list of options (see list below). The options offered are based on the choices of each group of incoming Fifth Year students and are designed to satisfy the choices of the maximum number of students possible.
The school’s capacity to offer a particular non-core subject will depend on the resources available to the school and on the level of demand for that subject in any particular year.
Where applications for a particular subject exceed the number of places available, places will be offered on the basis of order of preference and when completed Option Forms are returned to the Deputy Principal. Advice from the Guidance Counsellor to relevant students, their parent(s)/guardians and the Principal may also be considered, if appropriate.
